Impact Relief Goes Live in Malawi: A New Chapter of Local Leadership and Lasting Impact

On 1 April 2026, a new chapter in Malawi’s development journey officially began with the launch of Impact Relief (IR), a Malawian-led organization emerging from 37 years of World Relief’s work in Malawi. This milestone marks both a continuation of trusted partnerships and a bold step toward deeper local ownership, sustainability, and impact.

Impact Relief is built on a strong foundation. For nearly four decades, World Relief has walked alongside communities across Malawi, strengthening livelihoods, improving health outcomes, supporting food security, and promoting resilience in the face of shocks and crises. That legacy of service, learning, and partnership now lives on through Impact Relief, a fully local organization led by Malawians and rooted in Malawian communities.

From Global Partnership to Local Leadership

The transition to Impact Relief reflects a long-term vision: empowering local leadership to guide solutions that are context-driven, community-owned, and sustainable. While the name has changed, the mission remains steadfast—working alongside communities to address poverty, vulnerability, and inequality with dignity and hope.

Impact Relief inherits not only programs, systems, and partnerships, but also decades of institutional knowledge and trust built with government entities, civil society, faith-based organizations, and communities themselves. This continuity ensures that services remain strong, effective, and responsive during and beyond this transition.

At its core, Impact Relief is designed to put Malawian experience, innovation, and leadership at the center. Decisions will be made closer to the communities they affect, enabling faster learning, greater accountability, and more resilient outcomes.

Building on a strong legacy

Impact Relief builds on 37 years of World Relief’s work in Malawi, carrying forward a legacy of improving food security and nutrition, strengthening health and WASH systems, supporting livelihoods, responding to humanitarian needs, and strengthening local institutions for long‑term resilience. Guided by lessons learned and the voices of communities, Impact Relief brings continuity through experienced Malawian leadership while embracing innovation and new ways of working.

As a locally rooted organization, Impact Relief is grounded in Malawi’s social, economic, cultural, and environmental realities, ensuring accountability and relevance to the communities it serves. At the same time, it remains globally connected, drawing on partnerships, shared learning, and best practices now shaped by local priorities and leadership.

Looking ahead, Impact Relief is focused on strengthening community resilience to shocks, advancing inclusive development for women, youth, and vulnerable groups, deepening partnerships, and investing in local capacity and evidence‑based solutions. More than an organizational transition, Impact Relief represents a commitment to Malawian leadership and the power of locally driven development.
