From Trainee to a Changemaker: Maxon’s journey

How vocational training helped one man improve his family wellbeing and create opportunities for others in T/A Kaphuka, Dedza.

For many young people who leave school before completing their education the future can feel uncertain. With few opportunities for employment and limited income sources, it can be difficult to support a family or pursue long-term goals. This was the reality facing Maxon Malunga of Paiwe Kezuro Village in Traditional Authority Kaphuka, Dedza. A husband and father of two, Maxon wanted to build a better future for his family but lacked the skills and opportunities needed to get ahead.

Everything began to change when he enrolled in vocational skills training in tailoring.

What may have seemed like a simple opportunity to learn a trade became the foundation for a new chapter in his life. Through the training, Maxon gained practical tailoring skills as well as knowledge in financial literacy and business management, equipping him to turn his skills into a source of income. After graduating, he established a tailoring business and began serving customers in his community. As his business grew, so did his confidence and ability to provide for his family.

The income from tailoring created new opportunities beyond his workshop. Maxon invested in farming, helping to diversify his household income and strengthen his family's livelihood. Over time, the proceeds from his work enabled him to achieve one of his biggest aspirations: building a new home for his wife and children.

Before building their new home, Maxon and his family lived in this house. His tailoring business has helped turn the dream of better housing into a reality.

For Maxon, the house stands as a reminder of how far he has come and what can be achieved when opportunity is matched with hard work and determination.

But Maxon's story did not end with his own success.

Recognizing the value of the opportunity he had received, he decided to share it with others. He has since trained four people in tailoring, including his wife and three former schoolmates who had also not completed their secondary school education. By passing on the skills he learned, Maxon has helped others gain practical opportunities to earn an income and build their own futures.

Beyond his work as a tailor, Maxon is also a church elder within the Chimbiya Church Network. His leadership and willingness to invest in others have made him a positive influence in his community, demonstrating how skills development can create benefits that reach far beyond the individual participant.

Looking ahead, Maxon is continuing to dream big. He hopes to establish a business centre that will bring together a tailoring shop, salon, and barbershop under one roof. His vision is not only to grow his business but also to create employment opportunities for other young people in his community.

What started as vocational training in tailoring has become much more than a livelihood. It has enabled Maxon to provide for his family and help others along the way. His journey is a powerful reminder that when people are equipped with skills and given an opportunity to succeed, the impact can spread far beyond one individual, creating lasting change for families and communities alike.

By choosing to teach others what he learned, Maxon is proving that true success is not measured by what we achieve for ourselves alone, but by how many others we help along the way.
